1. About these terms
SolveOffs is an app for competitive speedcubing with a physical 3×3 cube. It is operated by Tijn Jansen, trading as GymVow, Goedentijd 27b, 5131 AR Alphen (NB), Netherlands, registered with the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce (KVK) under number 42126676, VAT ID NL005516251B63 (“we”, “us”). You can reach us at solveoffs@outlook.com or on +31 6 23442566. By creating an account or using SolveOffs you agree to these Terms. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information.
SolveOffs is free. There are no purchases, subscriptions or ads in the app.
2. Who can use SolveOffs
- You must be at least 13 years old to create an account.
- If you are under the age of majority where you live (18 in most countries), you need permission from a parent or guardian, and they should read these Terms with you.
- You may not use SolveOffs if we have closed your account for breaking these Terms, unless we agree otherwise.
3. Your account
- Accurate information. Use an email address that belongs to you and that you can receive mail at.
- One account. Keep one account. Don’t create extra accounts to manipulate ratings, leaderboards or matchmaking, or to get around a block or an enforcement action.
- Keep it secure. Keep your password secret and don’t share your account. You are responsible for what happens on your account. If you think someone else has access to it, tell us straight away.
- Usernames. Your username is public in SolveOffs. It must not be offensive, hateful, sexual or threatening, must not pretend to be another person, SolveOffs or our staff, must not contain someone else’s personal information, and must not use a name or trademark you have no right to use. We may change or remove a username that breaks these rules.
4. The game
SolveOffs currently offers:
- Ranked matches against other players, matched by rating (see section 6).
- Friend battles: live 1v1 battles with players on your friends list. A challenge lapses if it isn’t answered in time.
- The Daily Battle Challenge: one scramble per day (by the UTC calendar day of our server) and one verified attempt per account per day, with a leaderboard of the fastest verified solves that shows players’ usernames and times.
- Solo levels and Random Scramble: play against bots or practise on your own. These run on your phone and don’t affect your rating.
You need your own physical 3×3 cube with the standard colours, an iPhone with a working camera and an internet connection for online play. Results in SolveOffs are not official speedcubing records.
5. Camera verification
Before an inspection starts, the app uses your phone’s camera to check that your cube matches the scramble; after you stop the timer, it checks that your cube is solved. These checks run automatically on your phone.
- It isn’t perfect. Lighting, reflections, cube colours and camera quality affect the check. It can occasionally reject a correctly scrambled or solved cube (you may need to show it again, which can cost time), and in rare cases it may accept something it shouldn’t.
- It isn’t a guarantee against cheating. Verification makes cheating harder but can’t detect every kind of cheating. We don’t promise that every opponent or every result is genuine.
- Results stand as recorded unless we correct them under section 9. We can’t replay or re-check a solve after it has happened.
6. Ranked play and ratings
- Ratings. Each account has a rating (an Elo-style number that starts at 1000) and a rank based on it. Our server calculates every rating change when a ranked match ends. Ratings and ranks are only a measure of play in SolveOffs; they have no monetary value and can’t be transferred.
- Matchmaking. When you search, we try to match you with a player close to your rating; the range widens the longer you wait. We don’t guarantee you’ll find a match, how quickly, or that your opponent will be at your exact level.
- Recorded opponents. If we can’t match you with a live player within about 30 seconds, we may match you with a recorded performance: the camera-verified solve of a real player who won an earlier ranked match on the same scramble, played back on its original timing. That player isn’t taking part live. The match is decided the same way (the faster verified solve wins) and your rating changes against the rating that player had at the time; their rating and account don’t change.
- Your performances as recorded opponents. If you win a ranked match, your verified performance from it (with your username and rating at the time) may be used this way for other players. You can ask us to stop (see the Privacy Policy), and performances of deleted accounts are never used.
- Leaving and connection problems. If you leave a ranked match, or your app stays disconnected for more than 30 seconds, it counts as a loss for you; if that happens before the match has started, the match is called off and only you lose rating. If the time limit runs out before either player has a verified solve, the match is called off and nobody’s rating changes; if only one player finished, they win.
- Technical problems. Connections, phones and servers sometimes fail. We can’t promise to restore a match or rating lost to a technical problem, but if something went wrong on our side, tell us and we’ll look at it.
- Corrections. We may correct, adjust, reset or remove ratings, results and leaderboard entries that are wrong because of a bug, a technical failure or a breach of these Terms. We may also change how ratings and matchmaking work.
7. Fair play
Every battle is meant to be a fair race between real solves. You must not:
- use more than one cube to get through verification, for example showing one cube for the scramble check and solving another;
- swap, replace or prepare a cube at any point during a battle, or solve a cube other than the one you scrambled;
- scramble differently from the scramble shown, or start from a cube that isn’t fully scrambled as shown;
- manipulate the camera’s input, for example with photos, videos, screens, mirrors, virtual cameras or edited camera feeds;
- let someone else solve for you, or play on someone else’s account;
- stop the timer before you have finished solving, or otherwise interfere with the timer;
- manipulate rankings or leaderboards, for example by losing on purpose, arranging results with other players, or playing your own other accounts;
- use bots, scripts, modified versions of the app or any other automation, or interfere with our servers or other players’ connections;
- exploit bugs or security weaknesses. If you find one, please tell us at solveoffs@outlook.com instead of using it.
8. Respecting other players
Don’t harass, threaten, bully or intimidate other players, don’t use SolveOffs to discriminate against anyone, and don’t use it for anything illegal. Don’t send unwanted repeated friend requests or challenges. Speedcubing is a physical activity: play with care, take breaks and be aware of your surroundings while using your phone’s camera.
9. Reports, blocks and enforcement
- Reporting. You can report a player from their name in Friends, Recent matches or a leaderboard, or from a battle result. We review reports and act on them as quickly as we can. You can also email us.
- Blocking. You can block any player. Neither of you can then find the other by username, send friend requests or challenges, or be matched in ranked, and any friendship ends. You can unblock in Profile → Blocked players.
- What we may do. If we reasonably believe someone has broken these Terms or the law, or puts other players or the service at risk, we may remove or change their username, remove or correct their results and ratings, limit their access, or suspend or close their account. We act in proportion to what happened.
- Your say. When we take action against your account or content, we’ll tell you what we did and why, unless the law prevents it or it would put others at risk, and you can contact us if you think we got it wrong.
10. Your username and results
You are responsible for the username you choose and for anything you write in a report. You keep whatever rights you have in them. So that we can run SolveOffs, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, use, display and copy your username and your gameplay results (including your verified solves and match performances) as part of SolveOffs: for example in battles, leaderboards, other players’ match histories and as recorded ranked opponents. This licence ends when you delete your account, except for battle records kept in other players’ match histories without your username, as described in the Privacy Policy.
11. Our intellectual property
The SolveOffs app, website, name, logo, design and software belong to us or our licensors. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the app for your own non-commercial use under these Terms. You may not copy, sell, modify, decompile or reverse engineer the app except as the law allows.
SolveOffs is an independent app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the World Cube Association or the owners of the Rubik’s brand. Third-party names and trademarks belong to their owners.
12. Availability and changes
We work to keep SolveOffs running, but it may sometimes be unavailable, for example for maintenance, updates or problems with our servers or internet providers. We may add, change or remove features. If we decide to shut SolveOffs down, we’ll give reasonable notice in the app or by email where we can. Some updates may be needed to keep playing online.
13. Ending your use
You can stop using SolveOffs at any time and delete your account in the app (Profile → Account & privacy → Delete account). We may suspend or close your account under section 9, or if the law requires it. Sections that by their nature should continue after your account ends (for example 10, 14, 15 and 17) continue to apply.
14. Disclaimers
SolveOffs is provided free of charge, “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we don’t promise that it will always be available, be free of errors, verify every cube correctly, or meet your particular needs. If you are a consumer, you have legal rights that these Terms do not take away.
15. Our liability
Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, for damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence, or for anything else that the law does not allow us to limit or exclude.
Subject to that, and to the extent the law allows:
- we are not responsible for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable, or for business losses (SolveOffs is for personal, non-commercial use);
- we are not responsible for the actions of other players, or for lost ratings, ranks or results;
- our total liability to you for all claims related to SolveOffs is limited to 100 euros (or the equivalent in your local currency).
16. Apple App Store terms
If you downloaded SolveOffs from Apple’s App Store, these terms also apply:
- These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for the app and its content.
- Your licence to use the app is limited to use on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in Apple’s Media Services Terms and Conditions (the app may also be used by other accounts associated with you through Family Sharing or volume purchasing).
- We, not Apple, are responsible for providing maintenance and support for the app. Apple has no obligation to provide any.
- If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) for the app. To the maximum extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to the app.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party relating to the app or your possession or use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet legal or regulatory requirements, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
- If a third party claims that the app or your possession or use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim.
- You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated by the U.S. Government as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- You must comply with any applicable third-party terms when using the app, such as your mobile data provider’s terms.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms, and once you accept them, Apple has the right to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
Questions, complaints or claims about the app can be sent to us using the details in section 20.
17. Governing law and disputes
If you have a problem with SolveOffs, please contact us first; most problems can be solved quickly that way. These Terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands. Where the law lets us choose, disputes go to the competent court in the Netherlands. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of the country where you live, and you can always bring a claim in the courts where you live.
18. Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms, for example when we add features or when the law changes. We’ll post the new version here with a new effective date. If a change is significant, we’ll tell you in the app or by email at least 30 days before it takes effect, unless the change is needed sooner for legal or security reasons. If you don’t agree, you can delete your account before the change takes effect; if you keep using SolveOffs after that, the new Terms apply to you.
19. General
- These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about SolveOffs.
- If a court finds part of these Terms invalid, the rest still applies.
- If we don’t enforce a right straight away, we can still enforce it later.
- You can’t transfer your account or your rights under these Terms. We may transfer our rights and obligations to someone who takes over SolveOffs, provided your rights under these Terms are not reduced; we’ll tell you if that happens.
